A few words on the books we will use

Each of these books has greatly helped me, and thousands of others, learn the basics of ministry and serving Jesus. They are great tried and true tools in helping us gain a greater understanding of the delight and challenges of serving.

Victorious Christian Service by Alan Redpath

This book will help you see the seriousness of servanthood and how easy our flesh can get in the way. Alan Redpath was a distinct breed of man. He had the ability to study the Word of God and then to meditate on that study until a rich message had formed within his heart. Here, pastor and speaker Alan Redpath guides us through the book of Nehemiah and reveals for us the abundant life of Christian service.

Follow Me by Pastor Ken Merrihew

This short booklet will help you see servanthood from hundreds of different angles. It’s a ministry classic and should be read regularly every year. It’s so full of wonderful and challenging truths that you might feel a little intimidated reading it. Don’t be. Pastor Ken is the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel in Okalahoma City, OK. His plain speaking and down to earth approach to ministry is one that has been followed by many servants today. The love of servanthood he shares on every page represents a lifetime of spiritual growth; the same kind of growth that will come through us as we present ourselves to God for service.

Venture in Faith Video

This video was produced in 1994 by pastors Raul Ries and Mike MacIntosh. They succeeded to document the Calvary Chapel movement from its small beginning to the present day. Even though this video is dated 1994, you will still what the distinctives of the Calvary Chapel movement are and that they are very much alive today and relevant to our times.

Homework Assignments

A special encouragement on the homework: Don’t let it scare you. It’s not intended to overwhelm or discourage you, so don’t let it. The homework assignments are not much when you break it down into daily segments. You’ll find that you really can do it. Remember, serving Jesus will always cost you something, including your time. It’s definitely not always easy or comfortable and these homework assignments might end up being too much, especially if you get behind. Friend, persevere and endure, as you’ll find the fruit of your efforts sweet!

The homework here is different than when you were in school. The intent for us is not a human grade, but a spiritual grace imparted into your life. You’ll get out of this class what you put into it. So jump in with both feet and remember, Jesus is a great and gracious teacher! Homework assignments need to be completed prior to the start of each weekly class period.
